Title: indian stage one air filter
Post by: indimike14 on April 21, 2017, 01:04:22 pm
I just installed the stage one air filter from Indian. I would like to oil it like a K&N, but instruction's say not to. I live on a dirt road that create's fine dust and feel I need the extra protection it would provide. I know some gauze filters use different gauze that's not compatible with oil (supposedly). ANY IDEA'S anyone?

You could probably find an appropriately sized K&N wet filter to install in the Indian unit.

Senior Chief Vintage...was there any modification needed to install the universal AC from K&N? I asked K&N if the universal filter will work on my Chieftain and I did not get a great answer because I don't thing the CS rep knew at all. I will order the air filter for the OEM AC cover, but I would rather get rid of the bed pan if possible. Thanks!

NoxLumos, no, not really. After I removed everything I installed a pretty PCV filter from an auto parts store, or you can run the crankcase vent hose down below the frame like I've done on my Harleys. I think Cowboy cut up the back of the bedpan hosing to use the same hose bib but I didn't want all that crap going back inside.

Just an update, I solved my Stage 1 filter problem. I use a knitted watch cap I got at Big 5 to cover my filter while riding on my dirt road. After I get on pavement I take it off, shake it out and wad it up and put it in my handlebar bag.Better and cheaper than using a K&N rain cap which would always look dirty unless cleaned. Also I use a plastic shower cap to cover the filter when washing.

This may sound like a dumb question but what is a knitted watch cap? A picture would help if you know how to load one. Thanks. :-[

I also have a need for dust cover of some kind. So I too would like to know what a knitted watch cap is. Do you by chance have a link to one? Are talking about those silly looking wool sock cap things some wear in the winter?

I think thats exactly what he is saying and what a great idea. Easy to slip on and once off the dirt rd just pull it off . I think its a cheap easy fix , solves the problem and protects the bike .
And I will throw one in my saddlebag for the next time my riding buddys GPS takes us through a farm field lol.

I thought more people knew what a watch cap was , sorry that's what we called them in the Navy. Essentially it is a knitted yarn beanie you wear on your head in winter. You can find most anywhere CHEAP. Choose one for a kid so they fit snug on your a/c. They wad up nice and you can even place them in your pocket after shaking them off and turning them inside out.Throw 'em in the wash to clean them.Work's for me.

I stopped in at O'Rileys Saturday and got a foam filter wrap for a lawn mower that fits perfectly on the 7 x 3 inch Indian Stage 1 filter. The filter is a dry filter and the foam wrap is a dry filter. The additional filtration should be perfect until I change it out to a K&N oil filter. At that point I'll go with the little beanie idea.

Does a K&N air filter element fit into an Indian Stage 1 High-Flow Air Cleaner? And is the K&N element a better piece? Thanks.

I can't answer. I hope it is and hope it's a simple change the Indian dry element for a K&N wet one. But which one I have no idea. Maybe someone hear will chime in with the answers.
